Many bikers and motorcyclists assume that the answer is yes! TFL’s website says ”Motorcycles are allowed into bus lanes on most of the Capital's red routes. “
It’s fair to say this subject is not clear cut. The short accurate answer is “not all bus lanes”.
The Transport for London website does provide maps of the lanes you can and can’t use but let's be frank when you are in London traffic you don’t want to be stopping every time you join a bus lane to check if your motorcycle or scooter is permitted.
The majority of bus lanes are usable without penalty; the key is to check blue signage at each and every junction. Bus lanes that can be used by motorcycles. Scooters and mopeds are clearly marked and if you don’t see the icon for a motorbike, don’t use the bus lane.
As ever it’s important in busy traffic to be aware and be careful when changing lanes and crossing traffic. Bus lanes will also clearly display if they are at all times or simply at peak times. This can also help you when deciding if you can use the lane or not.
If in doubt, stay out of the bus lane!
We hope this info helps and wish you a fine free ride or commute. If in doubt google “Can motorcycles use bus lanes in London” and visit the TFL site where you can download maps for your area.
